BELGRADE (AFP) -- A local election candidate was shot dead outside a polling station Sunday in the part of southwest Serbia during a row between rival party supporters, media reports said.

Ruzdija Durovic of the List for Sandzak was killed and his brother Sulejman was seriously injured in the shooting at Novi Pazar, radio B92 reported.

Police sealed off the polling station but have not yet commented on the incident.

Novi Pazar is the main town in the Muslim-dominated Serbian region of Sandzak, bordering Montenegro and Bosnia.

The shooting came as voters were electing representatives to the councils of Novi Pazar and three other municipalities in the area.

Two major regional parties -- List for Sandzak of Sulejman Ugljanin and Sandzak Democratic party of Rasim Ljajic -- have been political foes for years.
